Fascinated Hobbies/fun facts: I enjoy intense work out sessions alongside calming yoga practices. Playing board games with friends and family is one of my favorite pastimes. I recently started snowboarding, so I'm excited to improve myself in that area! What I love about chemistry: I love that nothing is set in stone, but there are often patterns that you can look for in the material. Even still, there is an unexpected curveball every now and then. What advice would you give new students? I would advise new students to find a study strategy that works best for them. There are many ways to approach learning, and if your current method isn’t effective, try something new. Don’t be intimidated by organic chemistry; once you start understanding the concepts, it becomes incredibly rewarding!

Major: Biology & Psychology What are your future plans? Medical school/PA School Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? Enthralling Hobbies/fun facts: I love camping, running, going on long hikes with my dog, and pretty much anything that involves being up in the mountains. What I love about chemistry: It reminds me of solving a puzzle or a riddle. I think there is something genuinely enjoyable about untangling intricate problems and, in the process, gaining a deeper understanding of why chemistry unfolds the way it does. When you put in the effort to become truly comfortable with each of the concepts, it becomes incredibly satisfying to apply them to any new problem that you are given. Advice to students: Your methods of studying and learning will be unique to you, and it can definitely be tricky to figure that out at first. Try out multiple TAs, and find the ones who explain things in a way that makes sense to you. We all have such different ways of thinking, and being able to learn from each other is what makes this class so interesting and fun. Also, do not be afraid or embarrassed to struggle because that is truly when the learning occurs. Making mistakes can only benefit you in the long run. This class is not easy, but it is so rewarding and you have the most amazing professor and a huge group of TAs who are all here to help you through it.

Major: Biology What are your future plans? Medical school/PA School Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? I am an aspiring pediatrician and I hope to one day advance access to preventative care for all kids and families. What I love about chemistry: Chemistry is truly an art. Major: Biology What are your future plans? Dental School Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? Enthralled Hobbies/fun facts: My favorite things to do when I have free time are rock climbing, speedcubing (rubik's cubes), and reading books. Brandon Sanderson is my author of choice, and my main rubik's cube event to compete in is the 7x7x7. What I love about chemistry: The more chemistry I learn, the better I understand dental materials and how they work. There have been so many times I've learned about a new dental material or concept and thought to myself "there's got to be a mechanism for that" and had to go find it for myself! I love that chemistry shows up in so many of the things I'm interested in, and it often reminds me that there's always more I can learn. Advice to students: When you feel like you've hit a wall in organic chemistry, I would recommend you do three things. First, get enough sleep. Second, dig deep and ask questions - but don't expect easy answers. You will find that the information you have to work the hardest to learn is the information that will stick the most. Third, reward yourself for the effort you put in! Find time to spend doing a hobby, exercising, doing something with a friend, or whatever you like to do. And never give up! This class isn't a walk in the park, but you absolutely can do well if you will put in the effort.

Major: Biology What are your future plans? Medical school/PA School Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? Fascinated Hobbies/fun facts: I recently started trail running and I'm running a half marathon in October. Other than that, I love skiing, baking and spending time with my friends. What I love about chemistry: I love organic chemistry because I feel like it explains the world around us. It's also very patterned-based, so solving organic chemistry problems feels like piecing together a puzzle and it's so satisfying when you finally uncover the pattern. Advice to students: Organic chemistry requires a strong foundation, so spending a lot of time nailing the basics in the first half of the class will pay off in the long run because even the most challenging problems always circle back to the basics! I've always described it as learning the alphabet, grammar and punctuation (i.e., Lewis structures, resonance, ARIO, etc.) before learning to read and write (i.e., reaction mechanisms & synthesis). And don't be afraid to ask questions! |

Major: Biology What are your future plans? Medical school/PA School Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? Rewarding Hobbies/fun facts: I love hiking in the beautiful mountains of Utah! I used to competitively play piano and swim growing up but now I play/swim for fun. I love going to the gym, eating with my friends, and listening to music. I also am a big matcha lover! What I love about chemistry: Chemistry can be seen everywhere!!! Chemistry is applicable to real life and understanding chemistry is truly fascinating. The knowledge gained can help solve real world problems makes it so exciting! Also, I enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems using critical thinking skills. Advice to students: Practice, practice, practice! Taking some time every day to practice the mechanisms will really reinforce your understanding and help you be more familiar to solve challenging mechanisms and synthesis problems. Also, be sure to have a good understanding rather than just memorize. Lastly, really make use of the Organizational notebooks! Ochem can be overwhelming with the sheer amount of reactions you will learn, so staying organized will lead to your success. Plus, they are extra credit!

Chemistry is such an important foundation for a solid interdisciplinary understanding of science. Advice to students: Attend discussions and office hours weekly, Complete all extra credit assignments (it makes a bigger difference than you’d think), try to get to lecture as much as possible (zoom is not as effective), Engage with the in-class questions and collaborate with other students, find a good balance of studying alone vs. studying with a group, Ensure you are able to complete all problems on each PDQ on your own before exams.

Fascinated Hobbies/fun facts: I enjoy reading, learning random facts, and teaching my fellow peers. What I love about chemistry: Rather than learning about concepts that have no connection to one another, you can apply the same rules you learned at the start of the course to new problem-solving scenarios. Advice to students: Making a genuine effort to consider how problems can be twisted is a great way to test for conceptual mastery.
