Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry?

Perfect

Hobbies/fun facts: I love to play guitar, sing, play video games, work out, and read.

What I love about chemistry: It explains so much about our lives! It is elegant, it is everywhere, and we still have so much more to learn about it!

Advice to students: Don't give up and Don't fall behind! The material is a little dense at first, but the more you study in the beginning, the easier it gets later.

Enjoy the material! Organic Chemistry is the only class I have ever taken where I felt like I was just playing a puzzle game.

What I love about chemistry: I love the mechanisms, it explains why certain reactions happen.

Advice to students: Rather than just reading the book for several hours, doing practice problems are the best way to succeed in this class. It might be overwhelming at first because of all the new content, but once you become familiar with it O chem becomes really fun!

Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry? Transformative

Hobbies/fun facts: I love cooking, listening to music, exploring nature, and traveling!

What I love about chemistry: I love how chemistry makes the world make sense. There are logical reasons for why each step in a mechanism happens the way it does. Organic chemistry allows us to synthesize an infinite amount of molecules that have the potential to change life for the better. Once you know the basics, chemistry is about problem solving, not memorization. It's artistic, creative, challenging, and so rewarding!

Advice to students: Pre-reading the textbook before lecture is so helpful. If you already know a little about the topic, then the lectures will only help to solidify your understanding. If you're confused about something, ask as soon as possible! Do (and re-do) all of the problems on the discussion worksheets and PDQ's. The best way to study is to solve as many problems as possible. You'll make a lot of mistakes along the way, but learning from them is the most important thing.

Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry?

Puzzle

Hobbies/fun facts: I like being outdoors and love hiking and camping. I also enjoy reading and spending time with animals.

What I love about chemistry: I love Organic Chemistry because it’s like solving a fun puzzle! It challenges you and helps you develop new logical thinking skills. O-Chem is also extremely helpful in understanding other scientific fields such as Biochemistry and Cell Biology.

Advice to students: Use the resources available to you, especially the ones that are specially designed by Holly for the class! Read the textbook, do practice problems, go through the slides, and rework the practice sets and PDQs before quizzes and tests. Don’t procrastinate, because the information in the class builds and it’s easy to get left behind. Ask your TA questions! If we don’t know the answer, we can find someone who does. Go to Holly’s office hours if you have a particularly tricky question. Most of all, don’t give up when you get frustrated (even though it happens a lot).

Advice to students: I don’t think that Organic Chemistry is in itself difficult. It is just very different from everything else you’ve seen in the past. With O-Chem you have to practice on the application rather than the memorization. Do lots of practice problems, and be comfortable with being uncomfortable! I like to think of it like exercise because you want to constantly challenge yourself with something new.

Fun fact: I am an international student from Sai Gon (Vietnam), and I am currently work in Drosophila genetic lab in the Department of Biology.

What I love about chemistry:

I love chemistry because it makes you have to thing critically when solving the problems, and chemistry happens all the time around our lives. Besides, for me, understanding chemistry help me understand a lot of biological processes.

Advice to students: Organic chemistry might look challenge at the beginning. However, don't be afraid. Make sure you understand the materials and the concepts solidly. In order to do this, try to pre-read the material before classes (I pre-read the material for the following week during the weekend), and work through all the Smiths' problems (they are really good starting points). Do your best on the problems given during and after discussion. It is very important that you understand the "why" behind each problem. When you are studying for exams, try to work through the problems given in class again, as well as problems from SI or other TAs. Don't hesitate asking any questions to the TAs, and professor Sebahar.

Excited 🤩

Hobbies/fun facts: I love music and sports! I love to play piano and guitar and listen to all types of music. My favorite teams are the Dodgers, Jazz, Utes, and Broncos.

What I love about chemistry: I love organic chemistry because it's like a puzzle. Syntheses and mechanisms are really just ways to explain how a molecule was formed or how two molecules might interact. Once you have the tools to understand what is happening, it really feels just like solving a sudoku or finishing a crossword.

Advice to students: Take time and put in the work. Organic chemistry isn't something you can learn the night before a test. If you take time every week to do the PDQs and homework, you'll have a much better experience.

Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry?

Rewarding

Hobbies/fun facts: I love chem puns and jokes #nerdalert

What I love about chemistry:

For me, learning Organic Chemistry was like gaining a new skill. The more I studied, the better I got giving me the control over my progress in the subject. The things I learned throughout the semester built upon each other and by the end of the semester I looked back on the things that I had struggled with when I first started O-Chem and realized that I now could complete them quickly and easily because I had mastered the skills necessary. If you study hard and devote your time to O-Chem I believe you too can master the skills required of O-Chem and find that you had fun doing so.

Advice to students: My biggest advice is to stay on top of O-Chem! Always do (and re-do) the homework, PDQ’s and discussion worksheets. Never be afraid to ASK QUESTIONS until you understand every topic thoroughly.

Also, good study buddies make O-Chem much more enjoyable and less overwhelming! Find someone that you work well with and arrange a time every week to work on O-Chem together.

Which one word describes how you feel about organic chemistry?

Lovely

Hobbies/fun facts: Going outside is a great time: mountain biking, hiking, skiing, camping, backpacking, fishing. Even soccer and reading. And watching educational YouTube videos.

What I love about chemistry: At the end of the day, it's just a big puzzle. There are a lot of different pieces that can be used to get a product you want, but there is only one way you can fit those pieces together. And when you do complete the puzzle, it is very satisfying.

Advice to students: Don't try to memorize things. Instead, understand the basis for why mechanisms work the way they do, so that when you see a problem that looks unfamiliar at first, you can use your understanding to find a solution, instead of being stuck with a memorized mechanism that isn't applicable in every situation.

Also, do all the problems you can to prepare for quizzes and exams. Exposure to many different problems will give you a good foundation for the kinds of problems you might see on a quiz or exam.

Advice to students: Build yourself a strong foundation in the beginning of the course because everything builds. If you are unclear on a concept, get assistance before you get overwhelmed. Trust the learning process and try not get frustrated if it is taking you longer to grasp a concept than your peers. Find a study group that you work well with because you can all hold each other accountable to study consistently.
