Teaching Thousands
Six chemistry professors at the University of Utah Department of Chemistry are the face of their discipline to thousands of students. Julia McNulty and David Pace wrote the article highlighting these passionate educators: Professors Lecturers Greg Owens, Jeff Statler, Holly Sebahar, and Associate Professors Lecturers Kaci Kuntz, Ryan DeLuca, and Elizabeth Greenhalgh.
Greg Owens teaches general chemistry and has taught classes ranging from 115 to 230 students since 2002, totaling over 19,000 students throughout his career.
Jeff Statler teaches general chemistry to over 700 students each semester and over 12,000 students over his 35-year career.
Holly Sebahar’s class sizes range from 200 to 340, with about 700 students per year and over 15,000 students in her career.
Since starting at the U, Kaci Kuntz has taught lectures to as few as 30 students and as many as 360, for a career total of around 4,000 students. Professor Kuntz teaches General Chemistry I and II.
Ryan Deluca teaches organic chemistry, with classes varying in size from 25 students to 350, with a total of approximately 3,600 students.
Elizabeth Greenhalgh teaches biochemistry and general chemistry classes and lab to about 300 students and over 2,500 students during her career.
Their experience and dedication help students achieve the necessary steps toward their science careers.
