Paul Oblad, PhD
DIRECTOR, D.M. GRANT NMR CENTER
paul.oblad@utah.edu

Paul Oblad began his career in chemistry here at the University of Utah where he developed a love for working in the lab under the direction of Tom Richmond. After receiving a B.S. degree, he went on to earn a Ph.D. at The California Institute of Technology working under John Bercaw and Harry Gray. He grew to love NMR as he relied heavily on the technique in his research. In graduate school, he worked as an NMR lab assistant where he maintained a 300MHz Mercury system and trained new users, a responsibility that would serve him well in the future. After graduating, Paul spent 10 years in research and development and managing groups in industry. He had many roles and projects ranging from process optimization, systems modeling, product formulation, refining process troubleshooting, and unknown material identification. He continued into management where he directed a research group focused on water conservation, implemented division wide portfolio and project management strategies, and managed a process lab. He ultimately realized he had a passion for teaching and working with students which led him back to academia. Here he loves deepening his knowledge of NMR and helping students in their research. He tries to share his love of science, technology, and the outdoors with his 3 sons Liam, Alex, and Charlie and learn how to be a better parent and educator from his partner Stephanie.

Dennis Edwards
NMR SERVICE ENGINEER

dennis.edwards@utah.edu

As an RF Engineer, Dennis enjoys all aspects of NMR spectroscopy, from cryogenics and superconducting magnets, scientific computer hardware, RF synthesis, generation, and power amplification, and probe testing and design.  And even a bit of chemistry...
He has attended factory training on every NMR spectrometer Varian and Agilent have produced since 1983, including instruments designed in the late 1960's, from 60 MHz analogue CW spectrometers to the strangest high field solid state NMR systems yet devised.
